WENHAM, Mass. -- Junior
Hannah Tavella and sophomore
Gina Newsome scored four goals apiece to help the University of New England to a 14-12 women's lacrosse victory over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday (April 10) afternoon at Brigham Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Nor'easters (5-6, 3-1 CCC) move past Gordon (8-2, 3-2) in the league standings and into a second-place tie with Western New England University. UNE will meet WNE on Saturday. Gordon saw its five-game win streak come to an end.
After spotting Gordon two goals in the opening minute of the contest, Tavella and Newsome each tallied a pair of goals over the next five minutes to give UNE a 4-2 advantage.
Gordon came right back with a pair of markers to tie the game, then Big Blue would score three times to offset three scores by the Fighting Scots' Anna Blomberg as the contest was knotted at seven heading into halftime.
The teams traded goals in the early stages of the second frame before Bailey Grinnell gave the home team its final advantage (9-8) of the afternoon.
From there, UNE took the lead for good with a four-goal run. Sophomore
Hannah Warren tied things up with 19:24 left, then Newsome and sophomores
Rachel Schwaner and
Jessica Deedon followed to put the Nor'easters up, 12-9.
Jane Dietrich scored three times in the final 11:41 for Gordon, but it would not be enough as sophomore
Macki Hill and Tavella added insurance goals for UNE.
Courtney Kendall was strong between the pipes for the Nor'easters, registering 18 saves -- including several brilliant stops in the closing stages of the contest. Deedon had two assists to contribute a three-point day for UNE.
Blomberg finished with a game-high five goals to go with five draw controls. Krysti Leach and Stephanie Fitzgerald combined to control 15 draws, as Gordon led 22-6 in that category. Goalkeeper Danielle Maguire made eight stops in goal.
UNE's showdown with Western New England is slated to start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
