BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Carolyn Gorajek (Hightstown, N.J.) and first-year Emma Beecher (Morristown, N.J.) combined for half of the goals for Bowdoin College, as the nation's 11th-ranked squad recorded a 16-4 victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 13) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Polar Bears improve to 2-0 with the triumph, while the Nor'easters remain winless in three outings.

Bowdoin finished with a 51-9 advantage in shots, but were limited somewhat by UNE first-year goalie Courtney Kendall (Waltham, Mass.), who posted 26 saves. Kendall's total -- which included 20 stops that came before halftime -- is the third-highest single-game effort in Nor'easters program history, and the most in the last six seasons.

After Big Blue sophomore Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) opened the contest with a goal just 1:47 in, the visitors tallied the next six over a stretch of 18 minutes to assume control.

The difference was 8-2 at the break, and wound up double that following the full 60 minutes of play.

In addition to her four goals, Gorajek also registered a team-best three caused turnovers. Beecher had four draw controls to go along with her four markers -- the first ones of the year. Sophomores Taylor Wilson (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Clare McLaughlin (Warren, Vt.) notched two goals apiece in support, and first-year Lindsay Picard (New York, N.Y.) ended with a goal, two assists, and six draw controls.

The Polar Bears captured 18 of the game's 22 draws, and Bowdoin won the ground ball battle by a 27-16 margin.

First-year Isabel Sippel (Ridgewood, N.J.), rookie Ella Blanchon (Washington, D.C.), and senior Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn.) each logged about 20 minutes in goal for the Polar Bears. Blanchon made a pair of stops.

For UNE, junior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored a pair late -- both coming from Newsome. Sophomore Nikki Smith recorded the Nor'easters' other goal. Junior Johanna Currier (Holderness, N.H.) had a match-high four caused turnovers.

Bowdoin opens its home campaign on Saturday (12 p.m.) against No. 9 Amherst College. The Nor'easters visit No. 7 Colby College the same day (1 p.m.).
