BOSTON -- Second-seeded UMass Boston received goals from five different players, as the Beacons moved on to the semifinals of the ECAC East Championship with a 5-2 win over No. 7 University of New England in a men's ice hockey playoff game at the Clark Athletic Center.
The nationally-ranked Beacons (19-5-2) advance to face the winner of No. 3 Babson College and No. 6 Skidmore College, who play this evening at 7 p.m.
Jeremy Finger got UMass Boston on the scoreboard first, scoring six minutes into the opening period to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead. Finger collected a rebound of a shot by Steve Weston and pushed the puck past UNE goaltender
Colby Drost. That would be all the scoring in the first period, as the Beacons held a slim 9-7 margin in shots on goal.
The hosts doubled their lead at 4:35 of the second when Rob Florentino drove home a slap-shot from just inside the blue line.
UNE sliced its deficit in half midway through the frame as first-year
Ryan Quinn converted his team-best 11th goal, which was assisted by
Adam Laite and
Jared Melman.
UMass Boston got the margin for victory just 1:22 later when Travis Daniel finished off a give-and-go for his 17th tally of the year.
The Beacons' advantage swelled to 4-1 less than a minute into the third. Mike DeGrazia did the honors for UMass Boston on a goal set-up by Daniel and Max Reavis.
The Nor'easters fought back to cut the deficit in half (4-2) at 8:36 of the third period on a power-play goal by
Russ Franey, assisted by Melman and Sam Vickich.
UMB completed the scoring two minutes later when Cam Sitterly scored on the the power play.
Rookie goaltender Zach Andrews had 20 saves for UMass Boston, while Drost stopped 34 shots for the Nor'easters, who end their season with a 6-17-2 mark.
