Sacred Heart blanks Nor'easters, 7-0, for sweep

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Sacred Heart University got goals from seven different players in a 7-0 shutout of the University of New England in a non-league women's ice hockey game Saturday (Feb. 2) afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. The win completed a sweep for Sacred Heart, which defeated UNE, 6-1, Friday evening.

The game was scoreless until late in the first period when Meaghan Souza converted a feed from Alex Davis to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Davis and Briana Connolly tallied second-period goals as the hosts assumed a 3-0 lead after two periods. Shots on goal were nearly identical over the first two frames, with the Pioneers holding a slim 30-29 margin.

Sacred Heart would explode for four markers in the final period to put the contest out of reach. Melissa Robbins, Natasha Klinoff, Cara Curran and Jennifer Hasson did the damage.

Alexius Schutt earned the shutout in goal for the Pioneers (16-11-2), She turned aside 34 shots.

Samantha Scobee had 43 stops for the Nor'easters, who end their inaugural season with a 1-11 record versus varsity competition.
