Nor'easters, NEC skate to 2-2 tie in league game

HENNIKER, N.H. -- Senior Adam Laite scored at 15:05 of the second period to even the game, as the University of New England played to a 2-2 overtime tie with New England College in an ECAC East men's ice hockey game played Friday (Feb. 15) evening at Clement Arena.

Heading into the final regular-season game of the campaign, the Nor'easters stand at 6-15-2 overall, 4-12-1 in league play. New England College is 8-12-4 overall, 6-8-3 in ECAC East action.

Laite tallied the game-tying goal off a feed from Russ Franey. Laite's ninth goal of the season now gives him a team-leading 21 points.

NEC got on the scoreboard first with 7:55 elapsed in the opening period when Cheyne Matheson converted a pass from Kyle Manlow.

UNE responded eight minutes later when Zach Lokey picked off a clearing pass as a Big Blue power play came to an end. Lokey drilled the puck into the back of the cage to knot the score at 1-apiece.

The Pilgrims grabbed the lead once again midway through the second on a rebound conversion by James O'Reilly.

Neither team was able to find the winning goal in overtime despite several quality scoring chances for the Nor'easters.

For the game, NEC held a 37-27 advantage in shots on goal.

Ian Edwards piled up 35 saves for the Nor'easters, while Shawn Sirman had 25 stops for the Pilgrims.

UNE plays a 4 p.m. road game tomorrow with St. Anselm College.
