BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Sacred Heart University scored three first-period goals and cruised the rest of the way for a 6-1 win over the Univeresity of New England in a non-league women's ice hockey game played Friday (Feb. 1) evening at the Wonderland of Ice.
Briana Connolly had two goals and one assist to lead the way for the Pioneers (15-11-2), who won their third straight start. Sarah Delaney, Alanna Woodford, Megan Ofner and Jennifer Hasson added one goal apiece.
For UNE (1-9),
Jenni Poulin enabled the Nor'easters to avoid being shut out with a third-period goal, her team-leading ninth goal versus varsity competition.
Leading 1-0 late in the first, Sacred Heart scored twice during a 29-second span to claim a 3-0 advantage heading into intermission number one. The Pioneers held a commanding 23-4 margin in shots on goal for the frame.
The Pioneers would notch a pair of markers in the second to put the game out of reach.
Sacred Heart goaltender Amanda Fontaine accumulated 22 saves to earn the victory.
Courtney Kendall played the opening 31:11 between the pipes for UNE before giving way to
Samantha Scobee. Kendall surrendered five goals and made 26 stops. Scobee let one goal in while being credited with 20 saves.
Both teams will face one another again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
