Jensen's third period carries Castleton past UNE

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. -- Nicoline Jensen scored three times in the third period to break open a tie game, as the Castleton State College Spartans pulled away for a 4-1 win over the University of New England in a women's ice hockey game played Friday afternoon (Nov. 8) at Spartan Arena.

The victory gets the Spartans over the .500 mark at 2-1-0 on the young season, while the Nor'easters now stand at 1-2-1.

With the score tied (1-1) after two periods, Jensen took over. She notched the game-winner at 5:54 of the frame, putting home a rebound to get her hat-trick underway. She would add an insurance goal with just over four minutes remaining, then she tacked on an empty-net marker with eight seconds on the clock to complete the scoring.

Jensen also had a hand in the first goal of the game when Lisa Kilroy got the Spartans on the scoreboard with one tick remaining in the opening period.

UNE evened the contest down a skater midway through the second period, as Shannon Smith took to the ice from the bench and found the cage for her first collegiate goal.

The score remained that way until Jensen asserted herself in the final frame.

Anna Daniels finished with four assists for the Spartans, who led 42-15 in shots. Paula Stephens made 14 stops for Castleton State to up her record to 2-0.

Samantha Scobee had a busy afternoon for the Nor'easters. She stopped 38 Castleton shots.

UNE returns home tomorrow for a 4 p.m. contest with New England College at the Harold Alfond Forum.
