Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Williams College scored three times in the final 5:33 to break open a tight game on its way to a 4-2 victory over University of New England in a non-league women's ice hockey game played Saturday afternoon (Nov. 30) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The win improves the Ephs' record to 2-3-0, while the Nor'easters slip below the .500 mark at 3-4-3.
With the score tied at one, the Ephs were able to find the cage three times late in the contest. Senior captain Gabrielle Vukasin put Williams ahead for good at 14:27, poking home a rebound off a save on a Williams' 3-on-2 rush. Junior Gwendolyn Schultz put the initial shot on goal and was credited with an assist, as was first-year Chelsey Stevenson, who started the play.
The Ephs would add what would prove to be an important insurance goal just 36 seconds later. First-year Hanna Beattie lit the lamp with a wrist-shot from the left circle, assisted by sophomore Michaela Levine and senior Cristina Bravi.
Williams continued its spurt by striking again at the 16:34 mark. Rookie Emily Krueger notched her first collegiate goal on a scramble in front of the UNE cage. Levine and Bravi once again set-up the goal for the visitors.
Despite being out-shot by a considerable margin, the Nor'easters held a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard until late in the second frame.
First-year
Emily Corrales got Big Blue on the board at 3:58 of the middle period, chasing down a loose puck in the neutral zone and breaking in down the right side. Corrales went upstairs, roofing a shot just under the crossbar for her fourth marker of the year.
The Ephs drew even just before the end of the frame when sophomore Hadley DesMeules re-directed a shot from the left point by first-year Ashley Arnold. Stevenson was credited with a secondary assist.
Williams would continue to push in the third but were unable to grab a lead until its three-goal spurt.
UNE senior
Jenni Poulin scored her team-leading fifth goal with three seconds remaining -- assisted by first-years
Melissa Boudreau and
Gabby Crugnale -- to complete the scoring.
Senior Rachel Nguyen was the winning goaltender. She stopped 16 shots for the Ephs, who play at Castleton State College tomorrow night (7 p.m.).
Sophomore
Samantha Scobee had a career game for the Nor'easters. She came up with a total of 55 saves, including 26 in the second period.
The Nor'easters return to the ice Thursday (Dec. 5) when they host Plymouth State University at 7 p.m.
