Hawks fly past Nor'easters with big second period

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Saint Anselm College broke open a tight game with three second-period goals on its way to a 5-1 non-league win over University of New England in college women's ice hockey action Monday evening (Nov. 25) at Sullivan Arena.

The victory is the fifth straight for the Hawks, who improve to 8-1 overall. UNE lost for the first time in five starts to drop to 3-3-3.

Despite holding a 21-7 margin in shots in the first frame, Saint Anselm only found the back of the cage once. Sarah Geisinger tallied midway through the period to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

The Nor'easters knotted the contest at one 2:17 into the second period when Mary Wirth scored off assists from Shannon Reynolds and Rachel Schwaner.

The tie was short-lived, however, as the Hawks dropped three markers over the ensuing 8:35. Nina Gozzi had the game-winner 1:45 after Wirth's tally, then Andi Foss and Tiffany Foss lit the lamp to give Saint Anselm some breathing room.

Courtney Winters would add a goal at 7:18 of the final period to complete the scoring for the Hawks, who held a commanding 66-18 advantage in shots on goal for the evening.

Hannah Synnott made 17 stops to improve her unblemished goaltending mark to 3-0-0.

Sydney Helmbrecht established a program single-game record for the Nor'easters, totaling 61 saves in what was a busy evening for the rookie netminder.

The Nor'easters are off until after the brief holiday break. They return to action Saturday (Nov. 30) when they host Williams College at 4 p.m.
