Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Heather Daley scored with 33.9 seconds left in regulation to lift Sacred Heart University to a 4-4 tie with the University of New England in a non-league women's ice hockey game played Friday evening (Nov. 22) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Daley tied the game as the Pioneers had just pulled their goaltender. She came up with the puck after a scramble in front of the UNE cage and was able to poke home the puck just inside the left post.
Neither team had a quality scoring opportunity in the extra five minutes, although Sacred Heart had four shots on goal, compared to just one for the Nor'easters.
Trailing 4-2 with just under six minutes in regulation, the Pioneers fought back when sophomore Hanna Skelley knocked in a rebound. It appeared as if UNE would still hold off the hard-charging visitors until Daley's marker with an extra skater.
After spotting Sacred Heart a pair of first-period goals, the Nor'easters surged back with four consecutive tallies to assume control. First-year
Emily Corrales scored at 14:48 of the frame to cut the Nor'easters' deficit in half.
UNE would come up with a huge second period to establish a two-goal advantage. Junior
Jaclyn Bria notched her first collegiate goal to tie the game. Bria's power-play goal came at the 8:40 mark. Senior captain
Jenni Poulin then asserted herself, scoring consecutive goals 5:07 apart to give Big Blue a 4-2 advantage.
Sacred Heart had grabbed its early 2-0 cushion thanks to goals from Skelley and first-year Emily Falvey.
Senior Sara Hanna had two assists for the Pioneers, as did first-year
Gabby Crugnale for UNE.
Senior goaltender Mandy Montgomery came on late in the second period to earn the decision for Sacred Heart (1-4-2). She allowed zero goals and made 13 saves in relief of classmate Alexius Schutt, who had 12 stops.
Sophomore
Samantha Scobee turned aside 32 shots for the Nor'easters (2-2-3).
The two teams will square off again tomorrow in a 2 p.m. start at the Harold Alfond Forum.
