BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England first-year
Lilly Henjes scored with 1:10 remaining in regulation, as the Nor'easters and Chatham University played to a 1-1 overtime tie in non-league women's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
After UNE's 3-1 victory over the Cougars on Friday evening, the Nor'easters now stand a 1-0-1, while Chatham is 0-1-1.
With the Nor'easters using an extra skater after pulling their goaltender with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Chatham was whistled for a penalty to give UNE a two-player advantage.
Big Blue capitalized just 21 seconds after the penalty, as Henjes came up with the puck after a scramble in front of the cage and scored with just over a minute to play to force overtime. First-years
Gabriella Moscato and
Shannon Smith assisted on the play.
The five-minute extra session was free flowing, with each team having several chances to go away a winner. The best chance of overtime came off the stick of Chatham sophomore Marie Soukoup with 1:17 remaining, but UNE sophomore goaltender
Courtney Kendall came up with a brilliant glove save as Soukoup tried to go top shelf.
After a scoreless first period, Chatham got on the scoreboard off a face-off. First-year Erika Martin skated behind the cage and wrapped a shot inside the left post for her first collegiate tally. Sophomore Katrina Hawkins and first-year Kaitlyn Perrins were credited with assists.
Kendall finished with 24 saves for the Nor'easters, while first-year goaltender Tara Treloar had 22 stops for Chatham.
The Cougars have some time off before hitting the ice next weekend at Buffalo State College.
UNE is back in action Tuesday (Nov. 5) when the University of Southern Maine comes to Biddeford for a 7 p.m. game.
