Marshall tips Big Blue past BSU into ECAC final

Box Score

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- First-year Brooke Marshall deflected home the game-winner with 1:58 remaining in double overtime to lift second-seeded University of New England into the finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Field Hockey Championship with a 2-1 win over third-seeded Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16) at Arold Field on the campus on Plymouth State University.

The Nor'easters (16-6) advance into Sunday's championship game (12 p.m.) against the top-seeded hosts (PSU), which dispatched of No. 5 Worcester State University in the day's first semifinal by a 7-1 margin.

It was the fourth marker of the year for Marshall, who got a touch on a shot headed wide left off the stick of junior Hannah Warren. The teams had played just over 28 minutes of 7-on-7 sudden-victory field hockey before UNE emerged with the decision.

Big Blue finished with a 12-9 edge in shots (9-5 on-goal) through it all, and a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.

UNE notched the lone score of the 1st half, as senior Hannah Tavella put in her 12th goal of the season after 20 minutes of action.

The cushion held until the 50th minute, when a save and rebound fell to Brittney Field on the right side of the cage and the sophomore pulled the Bears even.

First-year Holly Smith posted four saves to help the Nor'easters move past the semifinal round for the first time in three recent tries since appearing in the NCAA tournament field. In 2012, BSU scored twice in the second half to overcome UNE (2-1), and in 2011, Big Blue fell in 2OT (2-1) to Mount Holyoke.

Bridgewater State, which ends the year with an overall record of 16-6, received seven stops out of senior Kacie Sturgeon.

UNE's only meeting with Plymouth State was played in Biddeford for the ECAC final back in 2009, and the Nor'easters claimed the crown in overtime, 3-2.
