Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year
Emily Corrales scored two goals, as the University of New England opened the 2013-14 season with a 3-1 victory over Chatham University in a women's ice hockey game played Friday evening (Nov. 1) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Corrales opened the scoring at 12:19 of the first, setting up at the right post and poking home a feed from first-year
Shannon Smith.
That 1-0 lead would hold up until late in the second frame when Chatham first-year Brianna Rice re-directed a shot from the point by classmate Kaitlyn Perrins for her first collegiate tally with 2:15 remaining in the period.
Senior captain
Jenni Poulin put the Nor'easters ahead to stay 1:51 into the third, crossing over to her backhand in front of the goal and sweeping a shot inside the left post. First-year
Hannah Tarr set-up the play.
The combination of Corrales and Smith provided Big Blue with an insurance goal at 17:27. Smith broke in and fired a shot that was stopped by Chatham junior goaltender Megan Buchanan, but Corrales was on the spot to poke home the rebound.
Sophomore
Samantha Scobee had 16 saves for the Nor'easters, including a second-period denial of a breakaway attempt by Rice.
Buchanan stopped 30 shots for the Cougars, who were outshot, 33-17.
The two teams tangle with each other again tomorrow in a 4 p.m. start at the Harold Alfond Forum.
