CANTON, N.Y. -- The University of New England and SUNY Canton played to a 2-2 overtime tie in a mutual men's ice hockey season-opener Friday evening (Nov. 1) at the SUNY Canton Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center.
The Nor'easters got on the scoreboard first when
Zach Lokey found the cage on a power-play goal assisted by
Zeth Zielinski.
The Roos drew even less than five minutes later as Kristian Leach set-up Dave Schneider.
SUNY Canton would take the lead 7:29 into the second period on an unassisted goal by Austin Root. Root took advantage of a turnover in the UNE defensive end to get the scoring opportunity.
Ryan Quinn drew the Nor'easters back even two minutes later on a play assisted by
Chris Harlow and
Ben Pearl.
In the scoreless third period, SUNY Canton's Joe Casale drilled the crossbar on what would have been the game-winner with seven minutes remaining.
Colby Drost recorded 24 saves for the Nor'easters, while Morgan Barr stopped 37 shots for the Roos.
UNE returns to action tomorrow when they make the trip over to Potsdam, N.Y. to take on SUNY Potsdam in a game starting at 7 p.m.
