Depth carries Nor'easters past Regis, 138-93

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Seven different individuals found their way to event wins for the University of New England women's swimming squad, as the Nor'easters cruised to a 138-93 triumph over Regis College on Saturday (Oct. 26) at the Campus Center.

After opening with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay (2:03.46) -- swam by senior Alex Gabriels, sophomore Sara DeAngelo, junior Emily Zeimetz, and first-year Eleni Bautz -- Big Blue (1-0) proceeded to capturing the five events that ensued to built a commanding lead.

Gabriels (100 backstroke - 1:06.74) and DeAngelo (100 butterfly - 1:05.53) registered wins for UNE, as did junior Kelly Dolyak (200 freestyle - 2:08.35) and first-year Shae Aiguier (50 back - 33.18).

Bautz took second to Shannan O'Neil of Regis in the closest race of the day (50 free), posting a 27.86 to get edged by just 0.08 ticks. In the next event, however, Bautz came right back managed to touch the wall first in the 100 free (59.96).

Sophomore Rachel Romain finished the 50 breaststroke in 35.54, which was good enough to be 0.42 seconds clear of the next competitor. The 1,000 free was decided by a mere 0.31 seconds, as first-year Emily Fellows (12:56.88) nipped sophomore teammate Erin Page.

Haley Bowen also won an event for the Pride (1-1), who head to Bridgewater State University next Saturday (Nov. 2).

The Nor'easters are back in the pool the same day, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (1 p.m.).
