DiFilippo's game-winner lifts URI past UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Alisha DiFilippo (Hope, R.I.) broke a 2-2 tie with 2:55 remaining, and the University of Rhode Island added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds for a 4-2 exhibition game win over the University of New England Sunday (Jan. 27) afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The win gave the URI club team a weekend sweep of the Nor'easters, with the Rams taking a 3-2 home overtime win over UNE yesterday afternoon.

DiFilippo's game winner was a wrist-shot from the right slot that eluded UNE goalie Samantha Scobee (Minnetrista, Minn.), who was screened on the play.

The Rams had built a 2-0 lead before the Nor'easters rallied to tie the contest. Sophomore Cassondra Catlow (Saunderstown, R.I.) opened the scoring at 11:01 of the first, then first-year Brenna Callahan (East Falmouth, Mass.) doubled the URI advantage halfway through the second period.

Big Blue would rally behind junior Jenni Poulin (Pembroke, N.H.). Poulin cut UNE's deficit in half less than a minute after Callahan's tally, poking home a rebound of a shot by first-year Marissa Clifford-Biederman (Lee, N.H.). Poulin struck again at 16:19 of the second when she intercepted a URI outlet pass and weaved her way through two Ram defenders before drilling a wrist-shot just under the crossbar.

After DiFilippo gave URI the lead for good, sophomore Kristina Kennedy (Hanson, Mass.) added an empty-net goal with nine seconds remaining.

Junior Kayla DiLorenzo (Chepachet, R.I.) came up with 26 saves to record the win for the Rams.

Scobee made 30 stops for UNE, which wraps up its season next weekend at Sacred Heart University. The Nor'easters play a 7 p.m. game Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. tilt Saturday.
