BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Roger Williams University women's swimming team captured eight individual races and a pair of relays to top the University of New England, 153-109, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 19) at the Campus Center Pool.
Juniors Heather Beardsworth (Dover, N.H.) and Kristen Grandonico (Portland, Maine), as well as sophomore Stephanie Niman (Bristol, Conn.), each won twice for the Hawks (7-3). Senior Melly Marrington (Farmington, Conn.) and first-year Hailey Martel (Harwinton, Conn.) recorded the other two events wins.
For the Nor'easters (6-2), senior
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.), junior
Jenn La Comfora (Worcester, Mass.), and sophomores
Kelly Dolyak (Cheshire, Conn.) and
Emily Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.) each notched one victory on the day.
Beardsworth posted narrow triumphs in the 100-yard IM (1:06.81) and 500-freestyle (5:35.51), edging La Comfora (1:07.05) and Dolyak (5:36.49), respectively. Grandonico claimed the 50 breaststroke (33.73) and 200 freestyle (2:05.41), while Niman touched first in 50 freestyle (26.65) and 100 freestyle (57.86).
Marrington, who was 0.77 faster than UNE first-year
Sara DeAngelo (Hamilton, N.J.) in the 100 butterfly (1:04.60), took second in the closest race of the afternoon (50 butterfly), which was won by Zeimetz in 29.26 with a gap of 0.12 seconds.
Martel clocked a 1:13.25 in the 100 breaststroke for victory.
Arsenault swam a 31.63 to win the 50 backstroke, La Comfora posted a 1:05.68 for the 100 backstroke, and Dolyak's 19:32.81 was nearly a minute better than the next closest competitor in the 1650 freestyle.
Right out of the gate, the Roger Williams 200 medley relay squad (Alexis Mone, Beardsworth, Marrington, and Niman) logged a 0.37 decision over UNE (Arsenault, DeAngelo, Zeimetz, and
Rachel Hanley) with a 2:01.21.
Both teams hit the road next Saturday (Jan. 26) for meets at Eastern Connecticut State University (RWU) and Colby-Sawyer College (UNE).
