Strong Skidmore defense secures 3-1 win over UNE

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Skidmore College scored three times in a span of 17 minutes across the 1st and 2nd periods, and limited the University of New England hockey team to just 18 shots on target, en route to a 3-1 ECAC Men's East win on Saturday (Jan. 19) at the Weibel Avenue Ice Rink.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 6-4-1 in league play (9-7-2 overall), while the Nor'easters slip to 5-11-0 on the year (3-8-0 ECAC East).

Skidmore started the contest on a stretch of more than 12 minutes without allowing a shot for UNE. After 16:38 of action, Aaron Beck gave the hosts a 1-0 edge heading into the first break.

Ondrej Krajnak made it 2-0 following a neutral-zone steal and breakaway goal three minutes into the middle frame, before Brendan Cottam scored a little over 10 minutes later.

Senior Adam Laite (Howie Center, Nova Scotia) from junior Zach Lokey (Elizabethtown, Pa.) and first-year Ryan Quinn at the 15:30 mark put the visitors on the board.

Already down a man entering the final stanza, a second Skidmore penalty gave the Nor'easters 1:02 of 5-on-3 play. However, the Thoroughbreds managed the kill off the power play and preserve the two-goal advantage the rest of the way.

Ben Freiberg turned aside 17 shots in net for the home side, which visits Saint Anselm College on Friday.

UNE, which returns home to face league-leader Norwich University the same day, received 31 saves from sophomore Colby Drost (Franklin Lakes, N.J.).
