MEDFORD, Mass. -- Tufts University scored a pair of first-half goals on their way to a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday (Sep. 26) afternoon at Bello Field.
The victory made it six straight for the Jumbos (6-1), who are ranked 13th nationally in the latest poll. The Nor'easters dropped to the .500 mark at 4-4 on the season.
Tufts wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, converting on a penalty corner 2:29 into the contest. Sophomore Maggie Chapman (St. Louis, Mo.) drove home a low shot for her first tally of the season. Junior Emily Cannon (Atkinson, N.H.) set-up the play by controlling the corner insert.
The host Jumbos doubled their lead 11 minutes later when junior Kelsey Perkins (Barrington, R.I.) took a pass from senior Lia Sagerman (La Jolla, Calif.) and deposited the ball into the cage.
UNE closed the gap right after halftime. Junior
Casey Clark (Bethlehem, N.H.) pushed the ball down the right side before centering a pass to classmate
Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine), who finished the play 49 seconds into the frame.
Tufts received an insurance goal at the 41:21 mark when Sagerman lifted a shot into the upper part of the cage off a pass from Cannon.
For the match, the Jumbos led in shots (28-8) and penalty corners (15-2). Sophomore Brianne Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) played the first half in goal to record three saves and the win before giving way to junior Katie Stuntz (Mamoroneck, N.Y.), who came on to make one save and allow one goal.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) was busy in goal for UNE, turning aside 16 shots.
The Nor'easters return to conference play this weekend when they travel to Endicott College Saturday (Sep. 29) for a 1:30 p.m. showdown with the Gulls in a rematch of last season's Commonwealth Coast Conference title game.
