UNE offers impressive 2nd place finish at States

CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Thanks to a pair of 75's from sophomore Jared Melman (San Jose, Calif.) and a consistent overall group performance, the University of New England golf team finished as runners-up at the two-day Maine Intercollegiate Championship contested Saturday and Sunday (Sep. 22-23) at Val Halla Golf Course.

The Nor'easters totaled 616 with a first-round aggregate of 309 followed by a final-round team score of 307. The University of Southern Maine took first at 595 (295-300), while Husson University placed third with a total of 624 (307-317). Sitting in third after Round 1, Big Blue traded places with Husson on Sunday.

Graduate student Tyler Moody (Augusta, Maine) and junior Andy Emery (Winthrop, Maine) supported Melman's effort with outstanding performances of their own, both finishing at 152 (Moody 73-79; Emery 74-78).

Junior Mat Brown (Charleston, Maine) finished strong with a three-over round of 75 after shooting 87 on the opening day. First-year Paul Butkevich (Pomfret Center, Conn.) rounded out the UNE lineup with a two-day total of 171 (88-83).

Aidan Boyce of USM was the medalist for the event. He recorded back-to-back even-par rounds to finish at 144. Kevin Richardson of St. Joseph's College placed second with a total of 148.

The Nor'easters are idle until Friday (Sep. 28) when they will participate in the Southern Maine Cup to be held at Gorham Country Club.
