Nor'easters grab second place at UMF Invitational

NEWRY, Maine -- Led by strong rounds from sophomore Jared Melman (San Jose, Calif.) and junior Tyler Moody (Augusta, Maine), the University of New England golf team placed second at the UMaine Farmington Invitational Thursday (Sep. 13) afternoon at Sunday River Golf Club.

The Nor'easters posted a score of 325 to finish five strokes behind winner University of Southern Maine (320). Husson University finished just behind Big Blue at 326.

Melman chipped in on the final hole to card a career-best round of 78. Moody shot even-par 36 on the back to post a 79. UNE had three of its players break 40 on the back side to help overtake Husson and the host Beavers.

First-year Paul Butkevich (Pomfret Center, Conn.) shot 80 despite a triple bogey on the final hole. Juniors Andy Emery (Winthrop, Maine) and Mat Brown (Charleston, Maine) each had rounds of 88 to round out the UNE lineup.

Medalist honors were shared by Orion Cochrane of UMF, William Hutchins of Husson and Southern Maine's Josh Hogan. Each golfer shot 76.

The Nor'easters return to competition next Tuesday (Sep. 18) at the John Queenan Memorial hosted by St. Joseph's College at Point Sebago Golf Course in Casco. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
