Big Blue hands SJC its first setback with 2-0 win

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England field hockey team notched a goal in each half and limited Saint Joseph's College (Maine) to just three shots in a 2-0 non-conference victory Wednesday night (Sep. 12) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters move up to the .500 mark (2-2) with the win, while the Monks suffer their first defeat of the season and drop to 3-1. UNE is now 8-2 all-time against SJC.

Offensive chances were limited throughout the contest, as Big Blue finished twice as many shots (6) as its opponent. UNE sophomore Erin Bibber (Charlton, Mass.) knocked in the fourth shot of the game for the hosts in the 32nd minute, converting a rebound at the left post.

It took the Nor'easters a little less than eight minutes into the second period to double the margin, when sophomore Hannah Warren (Harrison, Maine) drove home on the left side off a pass from junior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.).

Both Bibber and Warren have now scored a goal in each of the last three outings.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) only needed to make a pair of stops to register the shutout for UNE, which begins Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) versus Western New England University.

For the Monks, senior Taylor Allison (Pawtucket, R.I.) recorded one save on the evening. Saint Joseph's returns home to face Simmons College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match on Sunday (12 p.m.).
