BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team, ranked 12th in Division III, used an 8-0 run to open the 2nd half to pull away from the University of New England in a 21-7 non-conference victory on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 22) at Ryan Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 9-5 on the year, while the Nor'easters conclude the regular season at 12-4 overall.
Bowdoin got four goals apiece from Carolyn Gorajek and Elizabeth Clegg, and three each from Katie Herter and Celeste Swain. Tara Connolly stopped five shots before giving way to Isabel Sippel, who made four stops and permitted one goal over the final 13 minutes.
Gina Newsome and
Nikki Smith both had two goals for UNE.
Samantha St. Pierre stopped four shots in 41:30 before being replaced by
Rachel Lee, who stopped four shots and allowed three goals over the remainder.
Cara Cole had a game-high seven draw controls for the Nor'easters, who got three caused turnovers from
Emily Lodge.
The Polar Bears opened up an early 5-1 lead after 11:14 of play, but the Nor'easters were able to stay within striking distance as the period progressed to where they trailed 10-5 at the break.
Bowdoin hit its stride coming out of halftime, however, scoring seven times in a span of 7:16 to put the contest out of reach. Clegg and Gorajek combined for six of the team's eight goals to open the period which gave the hosts an insurmountable 18-5 lead with 18:47 to play.
Bowdoin will return to action on Wednesday (7 p.m.) evening when its closes the NESCAC slate against Tufts University. Big Blue will not play again until May 2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) semifinals.
