BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine scored seven of the first nine goals in the second half and then held on down the stretch for a 15-13 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over the University of New England at the Big Blue Turf Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 7).
Facing a four-goal deficit twice (4-0, 7-3) during the opening half, Huskies junior Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Jenna Cyr (Limerick, Maine) combined to score four in a span of 3:07 in the latter stages of the period to even things up at 7-7. Things were knotted at 8-all by halftime, prior to the visitors taking control.
Both Turcotte and Cyr tallied four markers in the contest for USM (1-0), and Cyr added two assists for a team-high six points. Junior Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) and sophomore Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) chipped in with two goals apiece, and Forster, along with classmate Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) notched five and seven draw controls, respectively.
For the game, the Huskies gained possession from the draw 18 of 30 times, while outshooting their opponents, 29-23.
UNE (2-1) was led by junior
Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.) with five goals, and first-year
Gina Newsome (Danbury, Conn.) finished with four tallies. Sophomore
Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) had two goals along with two assists, and junior
Emily Lodge (Lyman, Maine) ended with a goal and two assists.
Lodge also had four draw controls, and sophomore
Johanna Currier (Holderness, N.H.) picked up a match-best seven ground balls.
After USM built a 15-10 cushion with 7:05 left, Cole kept the hosts alive by scoring at the 4:38 mark. Within the next 89 seconds, Lodge and Cole found the back of the cage to make the difference two, but UNE would not get an opportunity to shoot the rest of the way.
Sophomore goalie Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) earned the win by making five saves for the Huskies, who host the University of Maine Farmington on Saturday (1 p.m.).
For the Nor'easters, who face nationally-ranked Colby College on Sunday (12:30 p.m.), sophomores
Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made six stops in just under 40 minutes of action before giving way to classmate
Rachel Lee (York, Maine).
