NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- First-year Doug Lindensmith (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored a pair of goals to lead the second-ranked Norwich University Cadets to a 5-0 ice hockey victory over the University of New England in a quarterfinal round game of the ECAC Men's East Championship played Saturday evening before a crowd of 1,310 at Kreitzberg Arena.
The top-seeded Cadets (21-2-2) advance to host next weekend's semifinal round (Friday) and championship game (Saturday). Norwich will be looking to defend its league title.
After nearly 15 minutes of scoreless action, sophomore Travis Janke (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) got the hosts on the scoresheet, converting a feed from classmate Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn.).
Lindensmith would double the advantage at 18:32 of the first on a goal set-up by senior Shawn Baker (Mont-Laurier, Quebec).
Senior Owen Carpino (Nashua, N.H.) extended the Cadet advantage to 3-0 with the lone goal of the middle period just over halfway into the frame. Sophomore Chris Duszynski (Okotoks, Alberta) and junior Tory Allan (Davidson, Saskatchewan) were credited with assists on the scoring play.
ECAC Player of the Year Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) notched an unassisted goal at 8:32 of the third to make it 4-0, then Lindensmith wrapped up the game's scoring with 3:34 remaining.
Sophomore Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) notched his second shutout by making 14 stops, including a brilliant glove save on a 2-on-1 short-handed bid by UNE sophomore
