SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The University of New England women's swimming team captured nine individual events and both relay races to defeat Western New England University, 179-83, on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 8) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
Now standing at 4-1 on the season, the Nor'easters are off until after the holiday break when they head to Florida for the Bob Mowerson Sprint Meet on January 7 at the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Junior
Jenn La Comfora (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore
Emily Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.) each won a pair of races for UNE. La Comfora claimed the 50-yard breaststroke (36.11) and 100 backstroke (1:05.15), while Zeimetz touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (27.49) and the 200 individual medley (2:27.44).
Five other Big Blue swimmers finished in 1st-place during an event -- seniors
Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) and
Rachel Hanley (Wiscasset, Maine), sophomore
Kelly Dolyak (Cheshire, Conn.), and first-years
Sam Briggs (Oakland, Maine) and
Sara DeAngelo (Hamilton, N.J.).
Arsenault topped the 50 back race in a time of 30.89, and Briggs bested the field in the 100 breast (1:17.69). In the longer freestyle events, Hanley (200-yard; 2:13.65), Dolyak (500-yard; 5:37.50), and DeAngelo (1000-yard; 12:17.45) all recorded wins.
The Golden Bears (2-3) were led by Courtney Fitzpatrick, who won the 100 butterfly and 100 free. Her triumph in the freestyle went down as the closest individual race of the day, as her time of 1:00.58 was just 0.41 seconds faster than UNE junior
