Mustangs close with three straight to top UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Stevenson University scored the final three goals of the afternoon to turn a second-period deficit into a 3-1 victory over the University of New England in women's ice hockey action Saturday (Dec. 8) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Mustangs move to 4-3 with the triumph, while the Nor'easters remain winless in six outings. The two teams will meet again Sunday (12 p.m.) back at the Forum.

After a scoreless opening period, UNE struck first in the middle frame when junior Jenni Poulin (Pembroke, N.H.) redirected a shot past the Stevenson goalie. First-years Lauryn Huck (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Marissa Clifford-Biederman (Lee, N.H.) assisted on the play at the 2:49 mark.

The Big Blue cushion held for nearly 10 minutes, before first-year McKenzie Taggart (Centennial, Colo.) put the visitors on the board to even things up. Classmate Kristen Webber (West Lebanon, N.H.) registered the assist.

It took the Mustangs just 1:37 to net another and move in front (2-1), as rookie Megan Alexander (Redondo Beach, Calif.) scored. First-years Karly Vis (Murillo, Ontario) and Madison Lange (Califon, N.J.) notched the assists.

Stevenson finished the period with a 16-7 advantage in shots, and a 2-1 edge on the scoreboard.

Play went back-and-forth in the third stanza, with chances each way, but the Mustangs were the only ones to find the back of the net and establish a two-goal margin at the 6:29 mark. First-year Jessie Capanelli (Lancaster, Pa.) tipped in a shot by classmate Emma Sunness (Fort Collins, Colo.), with fellow rookie Molly O'Neil (Aurora, Colo.) also assisting on the goal.

First-year netminder Anastassia Nelson (San Antonio, Texas) made several key stops down the stretch to maintain the edge for Stevenson, and ended with 30 saves.

UNE first-year goalie Samantha Scobee (Minnetrista, Minn.) put forth a solid effort between the pipes, turning aside 37 shots that came her direction.
