Quick start propels Purple Knights past UNE

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Saint Michael's College struck three times in the opening 7:21 on its way to a 5-1 win over the University of New England men's ice hockey team in an ECAC East League contest played Friday night (Nov. 9) at Cairns Arena.

The Purple Knights get their first victory of the young season with the triumph (1-2, 1-1 ECAC East), while the Nor'easters drop back to 1-2 (1-2 ECAC East).

Ryan Arsenault led the way for the hosts with a pair of power play goals, and Mark Higgins added a goal and two assists. Josh Geary and William Cote also scored for Saint Michael's.

Geary, Arsenault, and Cote accounted for all of the Purple Knights' scoring in the 1st period -- each separated by just about two minutes in the early-going. Saint Michael's out-shot its opponent in the frame, 13-6.

UNE sophomore Mike Chase (Falmouth, Maine) put in the only goal of the 2nd, near the midway point, to make it 3-1. The power play marker was assisted on by classmate Jared Melman (San Jose, Calif.).

However, Saint Michael's tacked on two more just 1:35 apart early in the 3rd to extend the margin to the final total.

Mike Dizgun turned in 15 saves between the pipes for the Purple Knights, who welcome in the University of Southern Maine on Saturday.

For the Nor'easters -- who head to No. 2 Norwich University on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match -- junior Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.) made 23 stops in goal.
