Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice in the 3rd period as the University of Southern Maine netted three goals to come from behind and pick up a 5-3 ECAC East League win over the University of New England in men's ice hockey action Friday (Nov. 16) in front of more than 750 fans at the Harold Alfond Forum.
After sophomore Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) put in an unassisted marker just 2:10 into the final stanza to tie things at 3-3, Pompeo registered what would be the game-winner on the power play with a little less than eight minutes left, and then added some insurance with 2:39 to go.
The Huskies (3-2, 3-2 ECAC East) received 15 stops from first-year Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wisc.) to secure the triumph.
Senior David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) accounted for all of the USM scoring in the 1st period, with two power-play goals inside the last 1:51 to give the visitors a lead.
But the Nor'easters (1-4, 1-4 ECAC East) rallied in the middle frame for three goals to grab the edge at the 2nd intermission. Junior
Zach Lokey (Elizabethtown, Pa.) got things started at the 3:16 mark, scoring from his knees on a breakaway. As the period progressed, sophomores
Zeth Zielinski (Woonsocket, R.I.) and
Nick Kolb (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched power-play scores to move UNE in front, 3-2.
Momentum in the game was reflected the shot totals, with Southern Maine up 24-7 over the 1st and 3rd periods, and Big Blue holding an 11-5 cushion in between.
UNE junior goalie
Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.) turned in 24 saves on the night.
Junior Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) tallied three assists for the Huskies, who host Colby College in a non-league match on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
The Nor'easters are back in action the same day and time for a home date with nationally-ranked Bowdoin College.
