GORHAM, Maine -- The University of New England men's golf team fired its lowest 18-hole total of the season (303) to finish off the two-day University of Southern Maine (USM) Fall Classic, which concluded Monday (Oct. 8) at Gorham Country Club. Big Blue took 5th of the 10 squads in the event, 26 strokes off the pace set by Husson University.
The Eagles posted identical scores of 293 in each round to end at 586 for the tournament. Seven shots back was Endicott College (296-297) at 593, while the host Huskies came in third place with 595 (294-301). The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth claimed fourth at 599 (301-298), ahead of the Nor'easters at 612 (309-303).
Husson's Bill Hutchins followed up his two-under 69 from Sunday with a 73 on Monday to earn the medalist honor with a 36-hole total of 142. Endicott's Jack Wyman was second individually at 145 (72-73).
For Big Blue, which was again the most consistent team in the field, a mere five strokes separated the five players in aggregate score. Junior
Mat Brown (Charleston, Maine) and first-year
Paul Butkevich (Pomfret Center, Conn.) carded 76's in both rounds to lead the way with a 152 total. Sophomore
Jared Melman (San Jose, Calif.) closed with a 76 for 154, and graduate student
Tyler Moody (Augusta, Maine) came in with 156 after a 77 in Round 2.
Junior
Andy Emery (Winthrop, Maine) recorded UNE's low score of day two at 75, and finished the event at 157.
The Nor'easters now have three weeks off before the final event of the season -- the New England Intercollegiate Championship (Oct. 28-29) at the Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Mass.
