STANDISH, Maine -- With four runners in the Top 20, a split-squad University of New England team finished second out of 11 at the Runnin' Monks Invitational hosted Saturday (Oct. 6) by St. Joseph's College.
Other members of UNE's team were competing at the James Earley Invitational in Westfield, Mass.
The Nor'easters totaled 78 points to trail winner Emerson College by seven. Lasell College (91) finished third.
UNE first-year
Taylor Vogt (Bow, N.H.) was sixth overall with an eight-kilometer time of 30:05. He was followed by sophomore
Trevor Updike (Newburyport, Mass.) in 14th with a time of 31:36. Sophomore
Ryan Curran (Biddeford, Maine) and first-year
Peter Swan (Gloucester, R.I.) also cracked the Top 20 with times of 32:19 and 32;20.
Rounding out Big Blue's scoring competitors was sophomore
Ryan Funai (Sandown, N.H.), who placed 22nd with a time of 32:33.
Joe DiSalvo of St. Joe's took advantage of his home-course knowledge to edge UMaine Presque Isle's Thomas Grylka by less than a second.
The Nor'easters will compete in the Maine Intercollegiate Championship next Saturday (Oct. 13). The event, hosted by the University of Southern Maine, gets underway at 11 a.m.
