MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Host Salve Regina University jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held off a late University of New England charge for a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey win Saturday (Oct. 6) afternoon at Gaudet Field.
The Seahawks won their fourth consecutive match to improve to 7-4 (2-2 CCC), while the Nor'easters drop to 5-6 (2-2 CCC). The victory was the first for Salve in the last six meetings between the two squads.
Salve Regina got on the scoreboard in the 27th minute when first Karen Corey (Groton, Mass.) blocked a UNE free hit and fed senior Kelly Burke (Georegetown, Mass.), who blasted the ball into the cage.
The hosts extended their lead to 2-0 a little more than 12 minutes after halftime. Junior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) broke down the right side before centering a pass to first-year Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.), who converted the feed.
