BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Ashley Hickey (West Gardiner, Maine) poked home a rebound with just under 11 minutes gone in the first overtime period to lift the University of New England to a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory over the University of Southern Maine Thursday evening (Oct. 4) at the Big Blue Turf.

Following near misses for both sides in the initial moments of the extra session, Hickey pulled the ball away from a scramble in front and netted her first collegiate goal to give the Nor'easters a fifth consecutive win over over USM.

UNE (5-5) had tied things up with 3:42 to go in regulation, as junior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) scored on a penalty corner play from classmate Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) and senior Emily Koehler (Pelham, N.H.).

Though the Nor'easters owned the vast majority of the offensive chances in the 2nd half (18-1 in shots; 14-0 in corners), the Huskies managed to keep the hosts off the board with countless blocked shots, five saves in the period from junior goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine), and a crucial defensive stop from first-year Whitney Mower (Garland, Maine) at the right post with no time left on the clock in the 2nd half.

Big Blue finished with a 27-5 advantage in attempts at goal and a 16-4 edge in corners, while Kennedy totaled seven saves on the night for USM.

After fairly even play in the early-going, Southern Maine went ahead in the 28th minute, as junior Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine) got a touch on a drive from first-year Allison Ward (Rockland, Maine) and tipped it up high over a crowd in front.

UNE sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) made a pair of saves for the Nor'easters, who head to Salve Regina University on Saturday for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match beginning at 1 p.m..

The Huskies (5-8) resume Little East Conference (LEC) action the same day (4 p.m.) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
