Nor'easters start season with win over Regis

WESTON, Mass. -- Junior Jenn La Comfora (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Kelly Dolyak (Cheshire, Conn.) each won a pair of races to help the University of New England women's swimming team kick off the 2012-13 campaign with a 151-111 victory over Regis College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27).

La Comfora took the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.36) and 100 backstroke (1:05.21) events, and finished less than a second away from a third triumph in the 100 IM (1:06.34) -- which was won by Brenna Melanson of the Pride.

Dolyak was 2-for-2 on opening day, sweeping the long-distance freestyle events. She posted 11:42.56 in the 1,000-yard race, and 5:43.99 in the 500.

First-years Sam Briggs (Oakland, Maine) and Sara DeAngelo (Hamilton, N.J.) each contributed one win in support, with Briggs clocking a 34.56 to take the 50 breaststroke, and DeAngelo posting a 1:16.31 in the 100 breast -- both edging out Regis' Haley Bowen in the process. Briggs also had a close second to Melanson in the 100 free later in the day.

Sophomore Emily Zeimetz (Rochester, N.H.) collected two second-place showings in the meet, touching the wall just behind the Pride's Svetlana Loranger in both the 50 free (27.38; -0.59) and 50 fly (29.37; -0.84).

Senior Meaghan Arsenault (Methuen, Mass.) took part in what was by far the closest event of the meet -- the 50 back -- and Loranger (31.60) was just fractionally ahead coming to the wall (31.65).

The Nor'easters (1-0) are back at it next Saturday (Nov. 3) with a visit to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
