Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Seniors
Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.),
Emily Koehler (Pehlam, N.H.), and
Suzy Libby (Danvers, Mass.) combined for four goals and four assists to lead the University of New England field hockey squad to a 5-1 victory over Salve Regina University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular-season finale Saturday (Oct. 27) at the Big Blue Turf.
The win moves the Nor'easters to 10-8 on the year, and 7-3 in CCC games. UNE will now get ready to host Nichols College in the CCC semifinals on Wednesday. A full release of the postseason pairings will come from the conference office later this weekend.
Egounis had two goals and an assists for Big Blue, while Koehler had a hand in all but one of the scores for her side (1 goal, 3 assists).
After four minutes of action, Koehler set-up Egounis for what would be the only goal of the opening frame. The advantage held until the 43rd minute, when Salve first-year Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I.) knocked home a pass from junior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) to tie things up.
From there it was almost all UNE, beginning with Egounis finding Koehler at the left post just over three minutes later. Junior
Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) got into the scoring column in the 50th minute, and Egounis blasted in another in the 57th minute, off a play from junior
Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) and Koehler.
Libby scored just moments before the end of regulation to provided the final tally, tucking a shot into the lower left corner off a penalty corner insert from Koehler. With the assist, Koehler equaled the program single-game mark of three, which had previously been shared by three others and last achieved in 2010.
Over the closing 27, the Nor'easters allowed a mere one shot and one penalty corner to the Seahawks, while racking up totals of 16 and 11, respectively, in those categories on their attacking end of the field. For the game, UNE led 28-8 in shot attempts and 18-6 in corners.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) made five saves for Big Blue, which rebounded from a 2-1 setback to Salve in Newport, R.I. on October 6 to get to 6-1 in the last seven meetings against the Seahawks, as well as finish off a 5-0 mark in home conference games this fall.
For Salve Regina, which ends the season with a record of 8-9 (3-7 CCC), sophomore goalie Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) turned away 10 shots that came on target.
