Engineers improve to 14-2 with shutout of UNE

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers took the lead less than three minutes into Thursday's (Oct. 25) field hockey match with the University of New England and never looked back, as six different players scored in a 6-0 non-conference victory at Jack Barry Field.

MIT -- which sits just outside the Top 20 in the latest NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll -- won for the ninth straight outing to get to 14-2 overall. The Nor'easters slip back to 9-8 on the season.

After a penalty stroke conversion by Maddy Wharton at the 2:57 mark, scores by Caitlin Mackey (11th minute) and Molly Duffy (28th minute) made it 3-0 at the break. The hosts took every one of the 14 shots in the frame, as well as all five penalty corners.

The halftime margin could have been more if it weren't for the efforts of UNE senior Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.), who recorded three defensive saves in the period.

Midway through the second half, the Engineers struck for two more in a span of 2:04 to increase the difference to five. Siobhan Rigby and Kimberly Barker were credited with the goals. Molly McNamara added another one late to provide the final tally.

For the contest, MIT owned a 22-1 edge in shot attempts and 17-0 in tries on-target.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) logged seven saves in nearly 57 minutes of work for UNE before giving way to first-year Lauren Cray (Essex Junction, Vt.), who made one stop in the remaining time.

Big Blue wraps up the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular-season on Saturday (4 p.m.) with a home date against Salve Regina University.
