Widdison gives Bison double-overtime win over UNE

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. -- Senior Emily Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) scored with 3:17 remaining in the second and final overtime period to provide the Nichols College field hockey team with a 2-1 win over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played under the lights Tuesday (Oct. 23) night at Michael Vendetti Field.

The Bison (11-6, 7-2 CCC) avenged an overtime loss to the Nor'easters Oct. 9 in Biddeford. UNE saw its four-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 9-7 overall, 6-3 in conference play. Each team has one league match left before the CCC Championship gets underway next week.

Widdison maneuvered her way inside the arc before driving a low shot just inside the left post to end the match. It was Widdison's league-leading 21st goal of the season and her sixth game-winner.

Nichols extended the game early in the second overtime period when sophomore Rachel Dalrymple (Bellvidere, N.J.) came up with a key defensive save on a bid by Big Blue junior Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine).

Widdison gave the Bison a 1-0 lead at 16:02 of the first half after she dribbled thru a group of UNE defenders and delivered a shot into the left side of the cage.

UNE knotted the game just 1:08 later as junior Casey Clark (Bethlehem, N.H.) re-directed a shot by senior Suzy Libby (Danvers, Mass.) for her sixth goal.

The Nor'easters held tough the remainder of the way despite being outshot nearly 3-to-1 in regulation. For the match, Nichols led in shots (24-11) and penalty corners (14-9).

Sophomore Molly Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) had a pair of saves to record the win in goal, while UNE sophomore Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) stopped eight attempts.

The Nor'easters play a road non-conference match at MIT on Thursday before wrapping up their regular season at home Saturday versus Salve Regina University.
