Pair of 2nd-half goals puts UNE past Gordon

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. -- Junior Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and senior Emily Koehler (Pelham, N.H.) scored just over five minutes apart midway through the second period to provide the University of New England field hockey team all it would need for a 2-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Gordon College at the Brigham Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20).

The triumph is the fourth straight for the Nor'easters (9-6, 6-2 CCC), and seventh in-a-row over the Fighting Scots (5-12, 2-6 CCC).

Sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) turned in eight saves for her third shutout of the season -- the second against Gordon, which UNE defeated by a 3-0 margin back on September 22.

After a scoreless first half, Tavella recorded her sixth marker in the last six games at the 44:16 mark to give Big Blue a 1-0 lead. Junior Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) assisted on the play.

In the 50th minute, Koehler doubled the cushion with a goal just off the left post, following a pass down from the top of the arc off the stick of senior Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.).

Anna Bury made eight stops for the Fighting Scots, who visit Salve Regina University on Tuesday (7 p.m.) for a key league match.

UNE is back in action the same day (7 p.m.) at Nichols College -- the team the Nor'easters are tied for second place with in the conference standings.
