GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore
Chad Lyons (West Rutland, Vt.) continued his strong running of late to lead the University of New England men's cross country team in a 5th-place finish out of the 11 teams competing at the Maine Intercollegiate Championship, held Saturday (Oct. 13) at the University of Southern Maine. Bates College put five in the top 10 to narrowly edge Bowdoin College for the win.
Despite Bowdoin runners finishing 1st and 2nd -- including individual champion Samuel Seekins in 25:05 around the 8K course -- Bates totaled 29 points to the Polar Bears' 30 to claim the team crown.
Colby College (88) and USM (109) also took spots in the top five ahead of the Nor'easters, who finished with a score of 150.
After Lyons' 26th-place effort (26:49) in the field of 166, classmate
Shane Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn.) crossed in 27:20 for 38th position.
Junior
Nate DiMartino (Hilton, N.Y.), first-year
Taylor Vogt, and junior Daniel Raboin completed the UNE total with finishes of 65th, 69th, and 71st -- all in under 29 minutes.
Big Blue is idle next weekend before taking to Western New England University on October 27 for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship.
