WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College returned to the ice after a 10-day layoff and received two goals from Mike Doherty as the Mules picked up a 5-2 non-conference men's hockey win over the University of New England Tuesday evening at Alfond Rink.

The triumph ends a seven-game skid for the Mules, who move to 4-13-0 overall. UNE -- winless in its last seven -- falls to 3-13-2 on the year.

Doherty got the hosts on the board 4:47 into the first period, and Ben Chwick made it 2-0 after one with a tally at the 17:07 mark.

Colby pushed the lead to 3-0 behind Doherty at 7:36 on the second frame, before goals from Nils Martin and Cory McGrath later in the stanza left the Mules on top by five heading into the third.

UNE, which out-shot its opponent by a 34-28 margin in the game, broke through in the final period for two scores. Sophomore John Tuell (Orono, Maine) registered the first marker for the Nor'easters 7:09 in off passes from senior Ted Fabian (Oakland, Maine) and classmate Sean Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.). Then junior Adam Laite (Howie Center, Nova Scotia) scored on a connection from first-year Zeth Zielinski (Woonsocket, R.I.) and Sullivan just 2:43 later to provide the closing result.

Matt Delaney stopped 32 shots in net for Colby, which resumes NESCAC action Friday at Hamilton College.

For the Nor'easters, sophomore Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.) turned aside 17 attempts on goal in the initial 40 minutes before giving way to first-year Craig Ryan (Wallingford, Conn.), who made six saves the rest of the way.

Big Blue is back at it this weekend with a home-and-home series against the University of Southern Maine. The puck drops at 7 p.m. in Biddeford on Friday, and then the two squads meet in Gorham at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
