NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The nation's No. 1 ranked team -- Norwich University -- scored five power-play goals on its way to a 6-0 shutout of the University of New England in ECAC East men's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 1,429 at Kreitzberg Arena.
With the win, the Cadets improve to 16-1-1 overall, 11-1 in league play. The Nor'easters suffer their sixth setback in a row to drop to 3-12-2 overall, 1-11 in ECAC East competition.
The Cadets would get the only goal they would need at 14:39 of the first when junior Kyle Thomas (Waltham, Mass.) scored with a man advantage for his 11th tally of the season.
Norwich used a pair of scores in the middle period to extend its advantage to 3-0. Junior Colin Mulvey (Worcester, Mass.) tallied the lone even-strength goal of the afternoon just over a minute into the frame, then first-year Alec Thieda (Rochester Hills, Mich.) took advantage of another man-up situation less than three minutes later.
The hosts would notch a trio of power-play goals in the third to win going away. Thieda lit the lamp for the second time on the afternoon less than a minute into the period before junior Pier Olivier-Catnoir (Rouyn-Oranda, Quebec) scored his team-leading 13th goal at 2:44 of the period. Junior Tory Allan (Davidson, Saskatchewan) completed the scoring with just over five minutes to play.
Sophomore Chris Czarnota (Wakefield, Mass.) played the opening 54:52 in goal and made nine saves to record the victory. Sophomore
Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.) stopped a total of 36 shots for the Nor'easters, who trailed 42-10 in shots on goal.
Norwich converted 5 of 11 power-play opportunities as a result of 14 UNE penalties.
Big Blue returns to the ice Tuesday with a non-league game at Colby College. Face-off time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Cadets travel to St. Anselm College on Friday for a contest starting at 7 p.m.
