Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Reid Lesswing (Amherst, N.Y.) knocked in the game-winning goal with 0.5 seconds left in regulation to shock the University of New England men's ice hockey team and give fifth-ranked Castleton State College a 3-2 ECAC East League victory Saturday afternoon at Biddeford Ice Arena.

The Spartans (14-3-0, 9-1-0) controlled the final face-off with 0:07 on the clock, and touches from juniors Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.) and Dan Bell (Victoria, British Columbia) found Lesswing positioned in front with his back to the cage. Lesswing spun to his left to make just enough contact with the bouncing puck, which then deflected up under the crossbar.

UNE (3-10-2, 1-9-0) had tied things up at 2-2 early in the third period, when junior Adam Laite (Howie Center, Nova Scotia) ripped-in an unassisted goal.

Big Blue sophomore goalie Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.) made 14 of his 42 saves in the final period to keep the contest level until the end.

The Nor'easters trailed 2-0 after Schoeneberger recorded a power play goal 48 seconds into the middle frame, but got one back at the 16:59 mark off the stick of first-year Zeth Zielinski (Woonsocket, R.I.). Senior Scott McManaman (Amherst, Nova Scotia) and sophomore Zach Lokey (Elizabethtown, Pa.) registered assists on the play.

Castleton led, 1-0, after one period, courtesy of a goal by first-year Ryan Frost (Fullerton, Calif.). Edwards turned away 18 shots in the stanza to prevent the visitors from expanding the cushion even more.

Spartans senior netminder Seth McNary (Woburn, Mass.) stopped 19 shots that came his way to earn the win.

Both teams are back in action Friday (7 p.m.) with league matches. Castleton hosts Saint Anselm College, while UNE heads to Vermont for a date with Saint Michael's College.
