Tupper's score in extra time sinks Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Senior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) gave the University of New England its second consecutive overtime win Tuesday afternoon, scoring just over two minutes into bonus field hockey action for a 3-2 victory against Framingham State University in a non-conference match at the Maple Street Field.

Big Blue improves to 4-0 on the season -- its best start since winning the first five contests in 2004. The loss evens the Rams' record at 1-1.

The Nor'easters pulled out in front in the 20th minute, as junior Laura Egounis (Boscawen, N.H.) drove home a shot from the top of the circle. Classmate Emily Koehler (Pelham, N.H.) registered an assist on the play after inserting the ball from a penalty corner.

Framingham answered back with 58 seconds left in the opening half, with junior Calista Tetreault (New Bedford, Mass.) setting up a goal by sophomore Kaitlyn Ranieri (Bellingham, Mass.). UNE held a 14-4 advantage in shots during the frame, but the score was still tied (1-1) at the break.

UNE sophomore Hayley LaPointe (Topsham, Maine) put in a rebound in the 59th minute to regain the lead for the visitors, only to see Tetreault find sophomore Katie Devoe (Fairhaven, Mass.) on a long cross for a deflection into the cage with 6:02 left in regulation.

After Big Blue came up empty in its initial two shots of the extra session, Tupper made the third one count to secure the win.

For the game, UNE out-shot its oppponent by a 26-7 margin.

First-year goalie Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) was called upon to make two saves for the Nor'easters, who will visit Husson University on Saturday (1 p.m.).

Framingham, which travels to Worcester State University the same, received 15 saves from junior netminder Sarah Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.).
