FARMINGTON, Maine -- The University of New England men's cross country team came one place from posting a perfect score as it earned a season-opening victory, besting a field of eight teams at the University of Maine Farmington Invitational on Saturday at Mount Blue High School.

Rookie Peter LePage (Limerick, Maine) came away victorious in his first collegiate race, circling the six-kilometer course in a time of 21:53. Sophomore Geoff Wahome (Lowell, Mass.) finished seven seconds behind LePage to grab second, while first-year Shane Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn.) was third at 22:05 and sophomore Daniel Raboin (Lunenburg, Mass.) fourth with a time of 22:13.

Big Blue just missed a perfect score of 15 by one point, easily besting second-place UMF, which compiled 87 points. Maine Maritime Academy (100) was third.

Sophomore Nate DiMartino (Hilton, N.Y.) was the other scoring runner for the Nor'easters. He placed sixth (22:25).

Big Blue returns to action next Saturday with the UNE Invitational at Rotary Park in Biddeford. Race time is slated for 11:30 a.m.
