UNE surges up rankings to take third at USM tourney

A career-best 73 from Tyler Moody in round two led the Nor'easters back into the top three

GORHAM, Maine -- With the program's lowest single-day total in recent history (303), the University of New England men's golf team moved up three spots on day two at the University of Southern Maine (USM) Fall Classic to finish third in the eight-team field competing at Gorham Country Club. Endicott College, which held a seven stroke lead over Husson University at the beginning of the day, managed to hang on and win by two.

The Gulls, led by medalist Jack Wyman's two-under 69, followed up their 294 on Sunday with a 291 Monday to end with a 585 total and edge the Eagles, who, after a 301 on the first day of play, posted an impressive 286 in the second round to settle on a 587 total.

Wyman's individual two-day score was 141, good for a three-stroke victory over Husson's Matt Loubier.

Entering the day in sixth after Sunday's 321, the Nor'easters logged four rounds in the 70's to finish the 36-holes at 624. USM (316-313) and UMaine Farmington (308-321) tied for fourth at 629, while Saint Joseph's College (633), UMaine Machias (687), and Emmanuel College (721) rounded out the field.

Sophomore Tyler Moody (Augusta, Maine) carded his personal-low of 73 to end at 150 in a tie for sixth individually. Senior Griffin Andrews (Rye, N.H.) came in with a 75 (155) for Big Blue in support, and was followed by sophomores Andrew Emery (Winthrop, Maine) with a 76 (159) and Mathew Brown (Charleston, Maine) with a 79 (161). Senior Gage Robertson (Freeport, Maine) had an 82 in round two for a 164 total.

UNE enjoys three days off before returning to Gorham C.C. on Friday (11:30 a.m.) for the Southern Maine Cup.
