Big Blue takes second place of nine at UMF Invitational

NEWRY, Maine -- Led by senior Griffin Andrews (Rye, N.H.) with a five-over-par 77, the University of New England men's golf team took second out of the nine teams competing at the University of Maine Farmington Invitational, played Thursday at a rain-soaked Sunday River Golf Club. Husson University captured the team title with a total score of 301.

The Nor'easters finished 20 strokes back of the Eagles with 321, while Saint Joseph's College (328) and the University of Southern Maine (333) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Husson players Chris Hamel and Mike Hersey each carded rounds of 72 to share the medalist honors.

After Andrews, who ended up tying for third individually, senior Gage Robertson (Freeport, Maine) came in with an 80 for UNE. A trio of sophomores -- Mathew Brown (Charleston, Maine), Andrew Emery (Winthrop, Maine), and Tyler Moody (Augusta, Maine) -- all recorded scores of 82.

Big Blue will be out to defend its 2010 State Championship this weekend at Val Halla Golf Club in Cumberland, as the first 18 holes of the competition is scheduled to begin Saturday at 11 a.m.
