Balanced attack leads No. 19 Bates in victory over UNE

LEWISTON, Maine -- Thirteen different players scored as 19th-ranked Bates College defeated the University of New England, 19-3, in non-conference women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

The Bobcats, who visit No. 12 Bowdoin College on Wednesday, improve to 7-4 on the year with their fifth straight win. UNE falls back to 4-11 on the season.

Junior Joan O'Neil (Westwood, Mass.) led the way for Bates with three goals and two assists. Classmate Lindsay Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) added two scores and a pair of assists, while sophomores Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Isabel Ballard (Shaker Heights, Ohio), along with first-year Liz Bassani (Havertown, Pa.), also tallied two goals apiece.

Sophomore Erin O'Connor (Avon, Conn.) notched three assists for the hosts, who out-shot their opponents, 37-8.

The Nor'easters received two markers from first-year Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), who also picked up four of the team's nine draw controls. Classmate Angela Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) recorded UNE's first goal of the match with 12:20 left in the opening half.

First-year Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) posted 11 saves for Big Blue, which concludes its The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) regular-season schedule with a road contest at New England College on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.).

Bates senior goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) made two stops in 17 minutes to earn the win, before giving way to junior Leah Elsmore (Broadview Heights, Ohio) and sophomore Eloise O'Connor (Loundonville, N.Y.) for the remaining 43 minutes.
