UNE ends season competing at the NCAA regional

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- With a 24th-place finish in the field of 51 institutions, the University of New England men's cross country squad brought it season to a close Saturday at the NCAA New England Regional Championship meet run on the campus of Bowdoin College.

Williams College (88 points) captured the regional title for the third time in the last four seasons, edging fellow NESCAC foe Middlebury College by merely a single point (89). The host Polar Bears narrowly took the third spot ahead to Bates College by a one-point margin as well (160-161).

Middlebury senior Michael Schmidt proved to be the top runner on the day, crossing the finish line on the 8K course in 24:40 to clear the other competitors by 14 seconds.

Big Blue first-year Shane Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn.) was the pace-setter for UNE, coming in 110th of 322 with a time of 26:58.

First-years Geoff Wahome (Lowell, Mass.) and Chad Lyons (West Rutland, Vt.) finished fractions of a second apart at 27:34, with Wahome taking the 148th spot by 0.13 seconds.

Sophomore Daniel Raboin (Lunenburg, Mass.) and senior Jonathan Dupuis (Groveton, N.H.) capped the scoring places for the Nor'easters, with sophomore Nate DiMartino (Hilton, N.Y.) and junior Chris Dracoules (Holliston, Mass.) not far behind.

UNE's 2011 campaign was its most successful in recent seasons, as Big Blue recorded a pair of event wins and finished with a 132-54 overall record.
