Tupper's hat trick carries Nor'easters past Fighting Scots

Bree Tupper struck for three markers in the first 33:18 to send UNE on its way to victory

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Bree Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) tallied three first-half goals to lead the University of New England on its way to a 4-0 win over Gordon College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match Wednesday evening at the rain-soaked Big Blue Turf.

Big Blue rebounds after its first setback of the season to improve to 14-1 overall -- 6-1 in conference games. The Fighting Scots fall for the third straight outing, back to 7-10 overall (2-5 CCC). UNE has now topped Gordon in five consecutive meetings between the teams.

Tupper put back a rebound right in front to open the scoring in the 15th minute, then drove home a long rebound just 2:40 later to up the cushion to 2-0.

After a saved penalty stroke and a pair of defensive saves, UNE's pressure resulted in another score for Tupper, coming with 1:42 left in the initial period. The Nor'easters finished the frame with a 21-8 advantage in shots, and up 11-3 in penalty corner opportunities.

UNE recorded all of the scoring chances in the second half, ending with a 16-0 cushion in shots during the final 35 minutes. Big Blue completed the scoring in the 58th minute, when junior Emily Koehler (Pelham, N.H.) took a feed from senior Michelle Oswald (Jay, Maine) on the left side and slipped a shot in at the near post.

First-year Kaitlyn Warren (Boscawen, N.H.) turned aside four shots to record her fifth clean sheet of the year, while her counterpart, Gordon sophomore Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md.) posted an impressive 21 saves.

Tupper's hat trick was the third of her career, and she now sits in a three-way tie for second on the all-time goals list with 36, level with Oswald and Michaela Franey '11.

The Nor'easters are back at it on Saturday, when they are scheduled to host Western New England University beginning at 1 p.m. The Fighting Scots make the short trip to Endicott College the same day (1 p.m.).
