Nor'easters claim fifth at State Champ.; Bates wins

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- First-year Shane Murphy (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished 42nd with an 8K time of 28:29 to lead the University of New England men's cross country team to a fifth-place showing out of 12 teams at the Maine Intercollegiate Championship run Saturday at Pineland Farms. Bates College had five of the top seven competitors in the event to take the team title with a score of 23.

Bowdoin College (43), the University of Southern Maine (70), Colby College (115), and the Nor'easters (167) rounded out the top five teams in the field.

The Polar Bears' Cody Horowitz captured first place individually with a time of 25:53 -- six seconds faster than Tully Hannan of Bates.

Also scoring for UNE was first-year Sean Hanrahan (Amston, Conn.) with a 58th-place finish (29:07) and sophomore Daniel Raboin (Lunenburg, Mass.) in 62nd at 29:17. Sophomore Nate DiMartino (Hilton, N.Y.) and first-year Chad Lyons (West Rutland, Vt.) crossed the line in 29:55 and 30:05, respectively.

Big Blue has two weeks off before the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship meet, which will be on October 29 at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I.
